Lows By far the heaviest Lamborghini, cabin unworthy of a quarter-million-dollar machine, did we mention it costs a quarter million dollars? Verdict When it comes to exotic SUVs, the Urus nails the formula with its appearance, performance, and pedigree. Overview The 2023 Lamborghini Urus isn't just an exotic SUV wearing a supercar badge, it's a supercar with an SUV shell. Not only is that evident by its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 657 horsepower, but also by its gob-smacking performance on famous racetracks—case in point, the new Performante model that broke the Pikes Peak SUV record. Lighter and racier, it's that newly introduced variant that reinforces Lamborghini's commitment to ensuring the Urus lives up to the brand's exotic pedigree. On the rare occasions it's now showing off its elaborate bodywork or outrunning almost everything else on the road, this high-riding Lambo is the only thing in the showroom that can pull a trailer and haul more than two—likely very rich—people. While its quarter-million-dollar price puts it out of reach for most of us mere mortals, and its interior isn't as special as it should be for such a huge sum, there's currently no other SUV like the 2023 Urus. What's New for 2023? The Urus sees an uptick in performance for the 2023 model year with the introduction of the new S and Performante variants; horsepower rises by 16 to 657 ponies. The Performante rides on a different suspension than the base S, one that has steel springs instead of air springs and sits 0.8 inches lower than normal. The Performante is also available with special shoes in the form of 23-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, size 285/40R-22 front and 325/235R-22 rear. While it still has a hefty curb weight of 5200 pounds, Lamborghini says the Performante is pounds lighter than the Urus S thanks to the addition of carbon-fiber body panels and the removal of sound-deadening materials, among other weight-loss measures. The 2023 model year also brings redesigned front and rear ends, along with a new fixed spoiler above the liftgate for the Performante, which also features specific seats and unique interior trim. Pricing and Which One to Buy S: $233,995 Performante: $268,666 Sure, we could save about $35k by opting for the standard-issue Urus S, but that means we'd also miss out on its maximum performance. That's why we want the new-for-2023 Performante, which features a lower suspension with firmer steel springs, myriad weight-reduction measures, and more. We'd opt for the larger 23-inch wheels, too, with the racetrack-ready Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber. Again, the mission is max performance. Engine, Transmission, and Performance All 2023 Urus models are powered by a 657-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. The engine burbles deeply when idling, and absolutely howls under full throttle. Permanent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission conspire with all that power to enable fantastic acceleration. In our testing, the Urus went from rocketed to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and tore up the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds at 121 mph. Likewise, Lamborghini estimates a top speed of 190 mph. The Urus feels athletic from behind the wheel, too, with quick steering and stable high-speed cornering. With air springs at all four corners, the Urus has adjustable ride heights based on its various drive modes. Standard carbon-ceramic brakes ensure that the Urus stops as well as it goes—braking from 70 mph to a stop in 149 feet. For drivers who want an even racier Urus, the new Performante model is the answer. It sits 0.8 inch lower and is claimed to 104 pounds lighter than the standard version. It's available with 23-inch wheels and super-sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. The SUV arms race has gotten to the point where automakers are one-upping even themselves, introducing higher-performing variants of their already high-performance machines. The 2023 Lamborghini Urus lineup is a case in point. Last year's Urus made 641 horsepower, but someone, somewhere decided this was insufficient, so they cranked the output up to 657 horses and called it the Urus S. But even that wasn't enough, because they've also gone and built a Urus Performante, which makes the same power as the S but is decidedly more hardcore on account of lightweighting measures and a more performance-oriented suspension and tire package. Had either been available, the Urus S would have been the choice to do battle with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and Aston Martin DBX 707 in our earlier comparison test. Like them, the S has height-adjustable adaptive air springs to go with its active anti-roll bars, torque-vectoring rear differential, and rear-wheel steering system. It might have given the Porsche a run for its money because the Lambo is built on the same platform as the Cayenne, but with a 4.3-inch longer wheelbase. It utilizes the same suspension layout, eight-speed automatic gearbox, and 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, but with the latter tuned to make 657 horses instead of the Porsche's 631 horsepower. Thing is, money might also have been its undoing, because at $233,995 to start the Urus S is about as expensive as the Aston, which lost out to the Porsche on account of price. As for our extroverted Viper Green Performante, it literally lives on a different plane of existence from the S and those others. In a nutshell, it ditches the idea of height-adjustable air springs in favor of coil springs. The chosen fixed height indicates an indifference toward ground clearance, as the Performante's permanent crouch slumps 0.8 inch lower than the "normal" height of a Urus S and matches the lowermost aero posture the S acquires at speed. If that wasn't enough to put paid to the very idea of off-roadability, the Performante's so-called Anima drive selector lacks all three off-road modes: Neve for slippery work, Terra for basic off-roading, and Sabbia for sand. In their place is Rally, which sits at the tail-out hooligan end of the spectrum, atop Strada (street), Sport, and Corsa (track). HIGHS: Undeniably quick, a certified G-machine, oddly compelling cabin. With the performance attitude firmly locked in place, the engineers set to work optimizing the chassis to suit aggressive pavement work and little else. Those lowering springs are firm to give the Corsa drive mode sufficient teeth—not to mention the ability to keep this lower-slung machine out of its bump stops. The active anti-roll bars and torque-vectoring rear diff have been reoptimized, and the center differential is decidedly more rear-biased than on a standard Urus. But the Performante's ace in the hole is its tires, Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R quasi-competition track-loving gumballs with a 60-treadwear rating that undercuts the 80-treadwear Pirelli Corsas on Porsche's Turbo GT. Mash the throttle and the Performante delivers, but it's not an across-the-board drubbing by any means. Though we've tested a quicker and stickier Cayenne Turbo GT, for this breakdown, we'll reference the Cayenne Turbo GT from the comparison test. The Performante is 0.2 second quicker to 100 mph, four-tenths quicker to 130 mph, and a tenth or two quicker in our 5-to-60-, 30-to-50-, and 50-to-70-mph acceleration tests. But its 3.0-second 60-mph time is a tenth slower than the Cayenne's, and it's an 11.2-second tie at the stripe at the quarter-mile—albeit with the Performante rolling 2 mph faster. What gives? The transmission ratios are identical, but the Lambo's diff ratios are fractionally lazier and its tires are an inch taller. Thanks: MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE CARS 🤍 🤍 2023 Lamborghini Urus Performante Is More of a Track Monster The ultra-high-performance version of Lambo's high-performance SUV excels in an unlikely arena. Arms races inevitably lead to the creation of overpowered weapons systems. That principle also applies to high-performance SUVs, such as the Lamborghini Urus Performante. Lamborghini began work on it well ahead of the introduction of the Aston Martin DBX 707 and the announcement of the upcoming Ferrari Purosangue, so the Performante technically isn't a response to either. But the turned-up Urus is aimed at the same crowd: cash-flush buyers who aren't satisfied with merely fast and want to skip straight to fastest. While the Performante has only a slight edge over the regular Urus in power output and acceleration, Lamborghini says that around a typical racetrack, this hulking SUV is now quicker than the original Huracán LP610-4 was just eight years ago. Granted, there are some provisos to that claim. Lambo's chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, credits much of the Performante's improved performance to improvements in tire technology—buyers will be able to option this super-ute with ultra-sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber. What's more telling: Rohr says that when the Performante and the standard Urus are using the same tires, the new version is three seconds faster on the demanding 3.9-mile handling track at Porsche's Nardò proving ground. We'll admit that a track-biased SUV might sound as ridiculous as a supercar that has been adapted for off-road use (which Lamborghini will also offer, with the announced Huracán Sterrato). But that seems to be the yardstick by which the makers of these super-SUVs assess themselves and their rivals. A prototype version of the Performante already has set an SUV speed record on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course, with a time of 10 minutes and 32 seconds, lopping 18 seconds off the previous benchmark from a Bentley Bentayga. So, this is a thing. Having driven the Performante on the Vallelunga circuit near Rome, we can also confirm that it is an absolute monster on a road course. Mechanical improvements over the regular Urus are more about responses than straight-line speed. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 here produces 657 horsepower, a 16-hp increase, while the torque peak of 627 lb-ft remains unchanged. The engine now exhales through an even raspier sport exhaust, and throttle mapping has been sharpened in all drive modes. The Performante also gets a new Torsen center differential, which can send more torque to the rear axle, where an active rear differential apportions it side to side. It sits 0.8 inch closer to the ground and ditches the air springs for steel coils, which lose the ability to vary ride height but sharpen handling. As on the standard Urus, adaptive dampers, an active anti-roll system, and rear-wheel steering are on hand, although with more aggressive software-defined parameters. The eight-speed automatic gearbox has also been tweaked to reduce shift times. Like its Huracán Performante namesake, the new Urus variant has shed weight. A carbon-fiber hood, lighter wheels, and a titanium exhaust are part of a package of revisions that have reduced mass by a claimed 104 pounds. Given that the last Urus we tested weighed 5314 pounds, the Performante is still no lightweight. Aerodynamic changes courtesy of the revised front end and a new liftgate spoiler manage the twofer of reducing aerodynamic lift by up to 38 percent while lowering drag. Verdict The 641-hp Lamborghini Urus is one of the wildest machines to ever be classified as an SUV. What’s not to love? Overview On paper, the supercar-bred, 641-hp Lamborghini Urus sounds overmatched against the 707-hp, Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. However, only one of these outrageous machines owns the crown as the quickest SUV we've ever run at Virginia International Raceway in our annual Lightning Lap event. For those who couldn’t guess, it's the Lambo, which costs nearly a quarter-million dollars. That's the entry price to own a wildly styled SUV of this pedigree. Along with unbelievable track skills for its size, the Urus offers some things that the Lamborghini Aventador and Huracán don't: a back seat, useable cargo space, and the ability to tow. While its interior craftsmanship isn't as good as its supercar siblings’, and it's the very definition of a gas-guzzler, the 2022 Lamborghini Urus is easily the most badass family hauler on the planet. What's New for 2022? For 2022, Lamborghini doesn't make any notable changes to the Urus. The super SUV is still powered by a 641-hp twin-turbo V-8 that pairs with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The Italian automaker is known for introducing limited-edition models and special appearance packs, any of which could be added during the model year.
